Typography Project

Process: I began my project by choosing a font that had impacted me this summer, thus I chose a little store in Michigan that I had gone to when I was there for a month this summer. This font impacted me because I really enjoyed the rustic look that it had portrayed. I began by cutting out a piece of watercolor paper and cutting out images of Michigan or those that reminded me of Michigan from magazines, and then collaged those onto that piece of watercolor paper with modge podge. I then cut out another piece of water color paper the same size as the collaged one, and used my reference image of the photo that I took when I was in Michigan of the store, to sketch the store in pencil. I then painted my piece with water color, and used a blue, white, and black pen to help the intricate lines to look more clean and neat to the viewer. I then cut out the actual text of the front sign from the store of the printed out picture of it, and then glued the onto the watercolor piece of paper. I then cutout the paper that I painted with watercolor and glued into the collage piece of paper.

Reference Image:

  • Sensory: Anna catherine suggested that I make sure that there are not any patches within the water color paint on to walls of the shop in my piece.

  • Formative/Technical: Anna Clare suggested that I make the store front sign a greater size in order to bring attention to the font that I had portrayed.

  • Expressive: Mrs. Johnson suggested that I add some more smaller cut out images from magazines to add to my collage to give it more intricacies.

Elements And Principals Of Design:

  • Space: I used space within my pieces when I collaged cut out pictures from magazines of ideas that represented my summer in Michigan as the background for the rustic store that I went to.

  • Texture: I used texture within my pieces when I created the look of the roofs shadowed bricks on it.
