Ndebele Hut Process Piece

Process: I began my project by researching the history and culture of the Ndebele huts in Africa. I then began to find my reference images for my piece and used those to create my own Ndebele Hut wall pattern. After this, I cut out my piece of board and used a pencil to draw my patterns onto it in order to portray the realistic ideas. I then used paint and gel pens to draw my colorful patterned walls with that I had previously completed in pencil, in order to create a modern and simplistic way. Once I finished this, I used a ruler and once again went over the black and white gel pen lines that I created so that the there wouldn't be any inconsistencies within my lines. Once I had finished this, I cut out a piece of plain white paper and measured it, drawing boxes to identify where my piece of board and drawings would eventually go, thus creating an even boarder that would go around from them. I then did additional research, and looked up other angles of blueprints of an Ndebele Hut. I then used my reference images to create my own two other viewed angles  of the Ndebele Huts, and drew them on the two spaced that I had made with a pencil. I then went over my pencil drawings of the them. Finally, I taped my piece of board that I drew my own Ndebele Hut wall patterns on showing onto the piece of paper that I drew the two blueprints to in order to portray these ideas.

Reference Images:

  • Sensory: Anna Catherine suggested that I make sure that my lines are clean and neat so that the patterns are consistent.

  • Formative/Technical: Anna Clare suggested that I go over the big triangle shapes with another layer of paint pen so that the colors are even.

  • Expressive: Mrs. Johnson suggested that I go over the black door that I previously colored in with sharpie back over with the black gel pen so that the color isn't streaky and shiny.

Elements And Principals Of Design:

  • Shape: I used shape within my piece when I created the square, rectangle, and triangle shapes throughout the pattern of the walls on the hut.

  • Line: I used line within my pieces when I used a white and black gel pen to further define the idea of the colors from this.
