Plexiglass Nostalgia Etch

Process-I created my project by choosing the theme that I would like to convey within my piece, that being nostalgia. From that I chose a photograph of myself that was taken by mom mother as a child, then conveyed this feeling. I then printed out my image in both color and  black and white, and taped it onto the piece of plexiglass that I chose. After this I used an etching tool and etched out my reference image. After I had finished etching my piece of plexiglass, I cut out 4 pieces of watercolor paper to the size that I wanted for my final piece, so that there would be some room on the edge of the paper for a white boarder that would surround my print. I then soaked the pieces of watercolor paper that I cut in the tray of water for ten minutes each. While my paper was soaking, I took a paint mixing tool and put a small amount of black ink onto my plexiglass, and then used a squeegee to scrape evenly disperse and scrape of the black ink, to ensure that the ink would seep into all of my watching marks that I made with the etching tool, and that the excess ink was to be put back into the ink jar so that I wouldn't waste that much of the ink. I then took a couple paper towels, whipping off and cleaning my plexiglass where there were no etching marks that were made by the etching tools, so that there wouldn't be any marks on my final project that were not wanted to be there, and lightly dapped off some of the black ink from the etching marks so that my plexiglass wouldn't print in such a dark color., in order to portray the details that went into my etching. I then took some q-tips and whipped off any excess black ink from the smaller detailed spaces, that were not in reach using the paper towel, to neaten my plexiglass up. After this, I took my watercolor paper out of the water tray, and lightly dapped off some of the water from the paper, so that the watercolor paper was not dripping wet. I ten took a piece of scrap paper, and folded it, placing the damp watercolor paper on top inside it. After this, I set my plexiglass face down on the paper, centering it the way that I had wanted to. I then folded the other piece of scrap paper onto of my watercolor paper and plexiglass, and then flipped it over, so that the water color paper would not be on top of the plexiglass. After this, I carried the folded scrap paper containing the damp water color paper, and plexiglass, and set it underneath the piece of fabric that id attached to the printing machine. Ensuring that the machine was tight, spun the handle, rolling the machine to tightly press over the folded scrap paper containing the damp water color paper, and plexiglass, which I then removed when it had rolled to the other side. I then  flipped the folded scrap paper containing the damp water color paper, and plexiglass over, and listen the plexiglass off of my paper, and set the printed paper onto my scrap paper to dry. When my printed water color paper was dry, I used water color paint to paint the swans beak's along with the pond water. Using watering down white acrylic paint to create the ripples in the water and the shadows from the swans. When the water color paint and acrylic painted had drying, I took a white gel pen, to neaten up the edges and intricate details within my piece.

Mid-Project Check In-

Peer Critiques-

  • Sensory- Anna Catherine Hunt suggested that I made the etching on the swans shadows more consistent.

  • Formal/Technical-Maggie suggested that I should remove more of the black ink with a q-tip from the intricate parts within the swans to make each swan more prominent.

  • Expressive-Ms. Johnson suggested that I should make sure that the pond water had more of realistic idea with the reflections and shadows to show with form.

Reflection-

Elements And Principals Of Design-

  • Element- I used line when creating the value and shadows of the picture of me along with the parts of the swans greatly with.

  • Element- I used shape when creating the etchings of the reference image that I chose.

Overall Reflection-
